Inside the Circle: Skills, Spirits and Scandinavian Wilds
Inside the Circle is a 7-day (July 13 to July 19, 2025) Arctic immersion guided by two of the world’s most experienced wilderness mentors—Michael Douglas, globally respected tracker and founder of Maine Primitive, and Toby Cowern, one of the foremost experts in extreme cold weather expeditions and wilderness survival. This is not simply a course. It is a journey through Sweden’s storied north—through rivers, forests, indigenous lands, and midnight sun.
Set within the taiga and tundra of Sapmi and the UNESCO Laponia World Heritage site, this experience integrates traditional survival skills, cultural encounters, and deep awareness practice. Together, we move through ancient lands with reverence—tracking reindeer, learning Sámi crafts, swimming Arctic rivers, and practicing solo stillness. The nomadic journey is designed for those ready to reawaken instinct, reclaim capability, and walk with presence in wild places.
For leaders, seekers, and changemakers—this is nature as mentor, mirror, and medicine.

Inside the Circle: Skills, Spirits and Scandinavian Wilds.
This is more than a destination. It’s a return. Inside the Circle is a rare opportunity to explore one of the Earth’s last great wild landscapes under the guidance of two of the world’s finest mentors—Michael Douglas, legendary survivalist, tracker, and founder of Maine Primitive, and Toby Cowern, renowned Arctic survival expert. This is a journey shaped by skill, story, and stillness—across taiga forest, glacial river, and Sámi homeland.
We travel through the Laponia World Heritage site—crossing the Arctic Circle, wading through northern rivers, meeting reindeer herders, and sharing fire beside ancient burial grounds. Along the way, we train the body, sharpen the mind, and listen to the land. You will learn to walk with presence, live with awareness, and lead from within. This is for those who feel the pull to go further—into wilderness, into culture, into self.
Route Summary: The journey begins in Luleå, on Sweden’s northeastern coast. From there, we travel inland to Storforsen’s roaring rapids. We continue north through Sapmi—crossing the Arctic Circle into Jokkmokk. Along the way, we visit the Ajtte Sámi Museum, hike Muddus National Park, find presence at a sacred gravesite, and stand atop the powerful Hårsprånget Gorge. We close the loop with a visit to an off-grid reindeer homestead before returning to Luleå.
Day 1 – Step Into the Wild: Arrive in Luleå and journey to the roaring rapids of Storforsen. This first evening is set by Arctic waters under a golden sky. As we establish our first camp and share a welcoming fire, you’ll be introduced to foundational awareness routines, gear orientation, and the spirit of the land. It’s not just about arrival—it’s about opening to the stillness.
Day 2 – Move Like the Land: Begin training in stealth, fluidity through dense forest and cold water. Swim in sacred rivers, craft nets by hand, and learn to blend into the land. Using Sámi skills and age-old practices, you’ll rediscover what it means to move with grace, silence, and intent.
Day 3 – Cross the Circle: Travel deeper into the ancient Sapmi region. Cross the Arctic Circle with ceremony and reverence. At the Ajtte Museum, immerse yourself in Sámi wisdom and craftsmanship, then head into the old-growth forest where we make camp among moss-laced trees and begin to slow time itself.
Day 4 – Fire, Water & Memory: Hike through Muddus National Park and visit an ancient grave site. Master the challenge of firecraft in damp northern conditions. Stand in awe at remote waterfalls. Around the fire, reflect on the relationship between ancestral tools and present-day resilience.
Day 5 – Reindeer & Resonance: Enter reindeer country with Michael Douglas as your guide. Learn the art of intuitive tracking through movement, terrain, and subtle sign. Hear from Sámi herders about seasonal migrations, and feel the presence of the land’s spirit through direct encounter with its oldest inhabitants.
Day 6 – Survival in Practice: Apply your accumulated skills in a live scenario. Navigate terrain, manage your own shelter, and work in silence. Visit an Arctic off-grid homestead where huskies and humans live as partners.(If this goes ahead it’ll be on day one) Discover how survival becomes stewardship—and how solitude sharpens perception.
Day 7 – Bring It Home: Return to Luleå. Close the circle with a fire-side reflection. Share insights, next steps, and how this journey will reshape the way you walk through your world. The land doesn’t give answers—it offers clarity. This is your moment to integrate what you’ve learned and carry it forward.
Themes & Skills:
Advanced tracking and situational awareness
Sámi cultural immersion and landscape literacy
Shelter, firecraft, navigation, and cold-water adaptation
Sensory expansion, movement, and field resilience
Solo time and reflection in the northern stillness
Deep mentoring with Michael Douglas and Toby Cowern
Summary: This nomadic journey is an invitation into clarity. A rare space to unplug, reset, and re-engage your senses. Whether standing in a reindeer corral, crossing Arctic rivers, or listening to birdsong around the fire, you’ll remember what it feels like to belong to the land—and to yourself. Inside the Circle, we train the body and listen with the spirit. We return not only with stories, but with a new way of moving through the world.
